Two rainbows in the sky, but the girl cannot see them. A gentle story after the rain.
In a field after the rain, two girls sit and rest by the roadside. The older girl is blind and has a concertina on her lap. The younger girl, probably her sister, turns to look up at two rainbows in the sky. The British Pre-Raphaelite painter Millais painted this in 1854–1856. It is now in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
The girl is a poor traveling musician who plays music from town to town. Around her neck hangs a sign that says "Pity the Blind". She cannot see, but she feels the warm sun on her face and touches the grass with her fingers. Millais set "seeing" next to "feeling". He showed how the girl takes in the beauty of the world with her other senses.
Millais began the landscape near the town of Winchelsea in southern England in 1854. He painted the two girls later in Perth, Scotland. The finished work was shown at the Royal Academy in 1856. In 1892, the politician William Kendrick gave it to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. It is still one of the museum's most popular paintings.
Two girls sit in a field. The older girl cannot see. She feels the warm sun. Her sister looks at the sky. There are two rainbows!
In a double rainbow, the colors of the outer bow are in the opposite order to the inner one. At first, Millais painted both bows in the same order. After the painting was shown, someone pointed this out, and he corrected it. It is a typical story of the Pre-Raphaelites, who tried to paint nature exactly.
A small tortoiseshell butterfly rests on the girl's shawl. It suggests how quietly she is sitting. But she cannot see it herself. It is a small, touching detail that only the viewer can notice.
It is said that Millais's wife, Effie, first posed for the blind girl. Later she was replaced by Matilda Proudfoot, a girl from a school for poor children and orphans in Perth. The younger sister was played by a girl named Isabella Nicol.
In the Bible, a rainbow appears after the great flood as a sign of God's promise never to destroy the earth by flood again. Some critics connect the rainbows in this picture with that promise. The rainbows may be read as a sign of hope in a hard life.
