Because she ate a pomegranate, she must spend part of every year in the underworld. A goddess painted eight times.
This is Proserpine, a goddess from Roman myth, known as Persephone in Greek myth. She holds a pomegranate in a dark palace. The artist, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, was a British painter and poet. Her blue-green robe, thick dark hair and red lips glow against the dark background. The model was Jane Morris, the wife of the designer William Morris.
In the myth, Pluto, king of the underworld, took Proserpine away. Her mother, the goddess Ceres, was so sad that Proserpine was allowed to return. But she had eaten pomegranate seeds in the underworld, so she had to spend part of every year there. While her mother is sad, it is winter. This story explained the seasons.
Rossetti painted this subject at least eight times between 1871 and his death in 1882. This one at Tate is the seventh version. It was made for the businessman Frederick Leyland. The eighth version was finished in the year Rossetti died and is now in Birmingham. This shows how much the subject meant to him.
This woman is a goddess from an old story. She holds a red fruit called a pomegranate. In the story, she eats it in a dark world under the ground. So she must stay there for part of every year. The painter painted her eight times!

The label in the upper right shows a sonnet in Italian, written by Rossetti himself. The English version is carved on the frame. His father came from Italy, and Rossetti was both a painter and a poet.
The label at the lower left says, in Italian, that Rossetti painted it at New Year 1874. But in fact, Rossetti had been working on several versions of this subject since 1871.
A square of light falls on the wall behind her. It is read as light from the world above, coming into the underworld. Rossetti explained that the incense burner shows she is a goddess, and the ivy stands for clinging memory.
Rossetti's wife was Elizabeth Siddal, who lay in the bathtub for Millais's Ophelia. Rossetti, Millais and Holman Hunt started the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood together in 1848.
