A painting with no story!? Eighteen girls with instruments walk down the stairs.
A line of young women carrying musical instruments comes down a spiral staircase. They all wear similar pale, silvery robes, and they are barefoot. The English painter Edward Burne-Jones began this picture in 1876 and finished it in 1880. It is a tall work, almost 2.7 meters high, and it hangs in Tate Britain in London.
This painting is not based on any known story from books or myths. We do not know who the women are or where they are going. Burne-Jones wanted a picture that we enjoy for its rhythm and beautiful colors, not for its meaning. He painted the bodies from professional models, but he used the faces of his own daughter and the daughters of his friends.
It was shown at the Grosvenor Gallery in London in 1880. He was still painting it just days before the show opened. A critic wrote that the women 'troop past like spirits in an enchanted dream.' Later the politician Lord Battersea bought it, and following his wishes, it was given to the Tate in 1924.
Many young women walk down the stairs. They carry musical instruments. They have no shoes. We do not know where they are going. It is not a scene from a story!

The models for the faces are said to include the painter's daughter Margaret, May Morris, the daughter of designer William Morris, and Mary Gladstone, the daughter of the prime minister. Margaret is thought to be the fourth from the top with a trumpet, and May the ninth, with a violin.
If you look closely, the perspective of the stairs has a mistake. About three of the 'steps' in the middle look like straight walls, with nowhere to put your feet. It is like a staircase in a dream.
He planned this painting in 1872, after a trip to Italy in 1871, but he only finished it in April 1880. He was rushing to complete it until just a few days before the exhibition opened. From the first idea to the finish, it took him nearly eight years.
None of the eighteen women wear shoes. Their feet on the steps continue from top to bottom like a musical rhythm. Following their feet with your eyes is one way to enjoy the picture.
