この作品のお話
Story荒れた土地の真ん中で、ひとりの魔女が杖で地面に円を描いています。円の中ではなべが煮え、煙がまっすぐ空へのぼっています。描いたのはイギリスの画家ジョン・ウィリアム・ウォーターハウス。1886年に描かれた作品で、今はロンドンのテートが所蔵しています。
In the middle of a bare land, a sorceress draws a circle on the ground with her wand. Inside the circle, a pot is boiling, and smoke rises straight up into the sky. The English painter John William Waterhouse made this picture in 1886. It belongs to the Tate collection in London.
魔法の円は、儀式のための特別な空間です。円の外には、魔女や不吉なもののイメージと結びつけられてきたカラスやカエル、ドクロがあり、魔女の力で遠ざけられているようにも見えます。首には生きたヘビが巻きつき、左手には三日月形の鎌。ペルシャや古代ギリシャの戦士のような模様の服は、どの時代・どの国ともいえない、不思議な雰囲気を生んでいます。
A magic circle is a special space for a ritual. Outside the circle are ravens, a frog and a skull, things often linked with witchcraft. They may seem to be kept away by her power. A live snake is wrapped around her neck, and she holds a crescent-shaped sickle in her left hand. Her dress has patterns like those of Persian or ancient Greek warriors, so she seems to belong to no single time or place.
この絵は1886年のロイヤル・アカデミー展に出され、同じ年に「チャントリー遺贈基金」によって650ポンドで買い上げられ、国の所蔵になりました。ウォーターハウスはその後も魔女や魔法使いの女性をくり返し描きます。2017年には大英図書館の展覧会『ハリー・ポッター：魔法の歴史』にも出品されました。
The painting was shown at the Royal Academy in 1886. That same year it was bought for 650 pounds through the Chantrey Bequest, a fund for buying art for the nation. Waterhouse went on to paint enchantresses many times. In 2017, this painting was shown in the British Library's exhibition 'Harry Potter: A History of Magic.'

In 2017, this painting appeared in 'Harry Potter: A History of Magic' at the British Library in London. It was shown with old magic books and objects, as a picture of how people imagined witches.

After it was shown at the Royal Academy in 1886, it was bought that same year for 650 pounds through the Chantrey Bequest. It was a big success for the 37-year-old painter.
