Many young women walk down the stairs. They carry musical instruments. They have no shoes. We do not know where they are going. It is not a scene from a story!

A line of young women carrying musical instruments comes down a spiral staircase. They all wear similar pale, silvery robes, and they are barefoot. The English painter Edward Burne-Jones began this picture in 1876 and finished it in 1880. It is a tall work, almost 2.7 meters high, and it hangs in Tate Britain in London.
