A little boat leans in the wind! Infrared found a boy who was painted out.
A small sailboat leans hard as it cuts through white waves. On board are one man, three boys and their fresh catch of fish. Winslow Homer, who also painted 'The Gulf Stream', made it. He used sketches from the summer of 1873, which he spent in the fishing town of Gloucester, and finished it over three years.
Homer began as an artist recording the Civil War and later became a painter of the American sea and its people. In this painting, the sail and the boys' bodies all lean, so we can feel the wind and the speed. Some say the way he balanced left and right shows the influence of Japanese prints.
When it was shown at the National Academy of Design in New York in 1876, a critic said no work in the show was 'truer or heartier'. It was also shown at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia that year. It came to the National Gallery of Art in 1943 and is now one of America's most famous paintings.
A small boat sails on the sea. The wind is strong, so the boat leans. One man and three boys are on it. The painter first painted four boys. Later, he painted one boy out!
Infrared studies showed that there was once another boy near the mast. Homer painted him out and put an anchor in the bow instead. There also used to be a second sailing ship in the distance.
Homer first showed the painting as 'A Fair Wind' in 1876. In 1887, it was shown as 'Breezing Up', and today museums use both titles together.
In Western art, an anchor has long been a symbol of hope. After the Civil War, the boys sailing with the wind are often seen as hope for America's future. People can read it in many ways.
When he was young, Homer went to the Civil War as a magazine illustrator and drew soldiers. That sharp eye later made his sea pictures so real. In his later years, he lived by the sea at Prouts Neck, Maine.
