A critic said it was just 'a pot of paint' flung at the public. The painter sued him!
Gold sparks rain down through a foggy night sky. They are fireworks at Cremorne Gardens, a pleasure garden in London. The painter was James McNeill Whistler, who was born in America and worked in London. He made this picture around 1875, and today it is in the Detroit Institute of Arts.
'Nocturne' was first a word from music. Whistler believed that a painting, like music, should be enjoyed for the harmony of its colors and shapes, not for a story. That is why its title begins 'Black and Gold.' Influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e prints, he did not paint details. He made the fireworks with flicks and dots of paint.
At an exhibition in 1877, the famous critic John Ruskin wrote that Whistler was asking two hundred guineas for 'flinging a pot of paint in the public's face.' Whistler was furious and sued him for libel. He won the case, but the damages were just one farthing, the smallest coin. He could not get back his legal costs, and with other big debts, such as the cost of building his house, he went bankrupt in 1879. Today the painting is admired as an early step toward abstract art.
This is a night with fireworks. Gold sparks fall from the dark sky. A famous critic said it was bad. The painter went to court. He won, but got only one tiny coin!

At the trial in November 1878, Whistler won. But the damages were only one farthing, the smallest coin at the time, worth a quarter of a penny. He also had to pay his own legal costs, and he went bankrupt the next year.
In court, Whistler was asked if he charged 200 guineas for two days of work. He answered, 'No, I ask it for the knowledge I have gained in the work of a lifetime.' People still quote this when they talk about the price of art.
Whistler did not give up easily. In 1890, he published a book called The Gentle Art of Making Enemies, which included the trial, so he could answer his critics in public. Even the title is full of irony.
Whistler called his night paintings 'nocturnes,' a word known from piano music by composers like Chopin. The title shows his wish that we enjoy a painting the way we enjoy music.
