A mother's portrait called 'Grey and Black'!? Even Mr. Bean got his hands on it.
In front of a grey wall, an older woman in black sits in profile and looks quietly ahead. She is Anna, the mother of the painter James McNeill Whistler. Whistler, who was born in America, painted her at his home in London in 1871. Simple colors, straight lines and square shapes are beautifully arranged.
Whistler believed a painting should be enjoyed like music, for its harmony of colors and shapes, so he cared about color more than the person. That is why he called it 'Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1'. He first planned to paint her standing, but it is said that standing for a long time was too hard for her, so she sat down.
At the 1872 Royal Academy exhibition, it was almost rejected before finally being shown. In 1891, the French government bought it, and it is now in the Musée d'Orsay. Later, in America, it became a symbol of motherhood. In 1934, it even appeared on a Mother's Day stamp. It is one of America's best-loved paintings.
This is the painter's mother. She sits on a chair and looks to the side. The colors are only grey and black. The painter called it 'Arrangement in Grey and Black'. Later, it was on an American stamp for Mother's Day!

Whistler wrote that the picture was important to him because it showed his mother, but why should the public care who the model was? He wanted people to see the harmony of colors and shapes. Still, the world loved it as a mother's portrait.
When Whistler needed money, he once pawned this painting. Later, in 1891, the French government bought it for the Luxembourg Museum in Paris. From a pawnshop to a national museum!
In the 1997 film 'Bean', Mr. Bean accidentally ruins this famous painting when it visits America. He secretly replaces it with a changed poster. Don't worry, that only happened in the movie!
The framed picture on the wall is Whistler's own etching of the River Thames, 'Black Lion Wharf'. Maybe he was quietly advertising his own work!
