By a lake in silver mist, a woman reaches up to the branch of a slender tree, while children pick flowers at her feet. The French landscape painter Camille Corot made this picture in 1864, when he was about 68. Today it is in the Louvre in Paris.
Mortefontaine is a village north of Paris with many ponds. Corot often visited it in the 1850s to study light on the water. But this is not an exact view. As the title 'souvenir' (memory) says, it is a landscape built from his memories. Some say the soft edges look like the blur in early landscape photographs, which Corot collected.
The painting was shown at the Salon of 1864, and Emperor Napoleon III bought it there with his own imperial funds. It hung in the Palace of Fontainebleau, became part of the national museums in 1879, and moved to the Louvre in 1889. This poetic landscape sits between Realism and Impressionism. It is seen as one of Corot's masterpieces, and it inspired many young painters.
This is a quiet lake in the mist. A big tree stands on the right. A woman reaches up to a small tree. Two children pick flowers. Corot painted this from his memory.

In 1864, the year it was shown at the Salon, Emperor Napoleon III bought this painting with his own imperial funds. It then hung in the Palace of Fontainebleau, a home of the imperial family. It became part of the national museums in 1879 and came to the Louvre in 1889.
Corot owned many early landscape photographs. In photos of that time, moving leaves often came out blurry. Some experts think the soft leaves in this painting try to copy the way those photos looked.
When Berthe Morisot was young, she first studied with other teachers. Then Corot guided her as she learned to paint landscapes outdoors. She later became an Impressionist. Corot showed the value of studying light outdoors. To many Impressionists, he was like a teacher.
Corot was known as a very generous man. It is said that he bought a house for the painter Honoré Daumier, who was growing blind and had little money. His paintings feel just as gentle as he was.
