Corot was born in Paris, where his parents ran a hat shop. At his father's urging, he worked for a cloth merchant, but at 26 he was finally allowed to become a painter. He spent about three years in Italy, painting sunny landscapes outdoors. In later life, his poetic landscapes, wrapped in silvery mist, became hugely popular. He was kind to young artists, who called him 'Father Corot.'
