A packed train car. The grid on the window shows it's unfinished!
In a dim third-class railway car with wooden benches, a mother holds her baby, an old woman holds a basket, and a boy sleeps. Behind them, the car is packed with passengers. Honoré Daumier, famous for his newspaper cartoons, painted it. By the 1860s, railways were changing everyday life, and many working people and people with little money rode in third class.
Daumier watched the lives of people in Paris closely and came back to this subject many times. The three people in front look like a family, but no one is talking. Even in a crowded car, each person seems alone. Their silence, the thick outlines and the brown colors make many viewers feel the loneliness of modern city life.
This version is unfinished. You can still see grid lines, used to transfer a design, around the windows. A finished version is in the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, and a watercolor version is in Baltimore. This painting came to the Metropolitan Museum in 1929 through the bequest of Mrs. H. O. Havemeyer.

This is the inside of an old train. It is dark and full of people. A mother holds a baby, and an old woman holds a basket. The painting is not finished. Can you see lines on the window?

As a young man, Daumier drew King Louis-Philippe as Gargantua, a giant swallowing the people's taxes. Because of that cartoon, he was sent to prison for six months in 1832.
Daumier made about 4,000 lithographs for newspapers and magazines in his life. He painted in oil between those jobs. During his lifetime, he was known more as a cartoonist than as a painter.
When Daumier was old, losing his sight and short of money, the landscape painter Corot is said to have bought the house Daumier was renting outside Paris and given it to him. It is a heartwarming story of friendship between artists.
The grid lines on the window were used to transfer the design accurately from one surface to another. Copying square by square keeps the shapes right. Because the painting is unfinished, we can still see this step.
