A white dress, a white curtain, a girl in white. But an animal bares its teeth at her feet!
A young woman in a white dress stands in front of a white curtain. Her long red hair hangs down, and she holds a white lily. At her feet lies an animal skin with its head still on. The American-born painter Whistler worked on this huge painting, more than two meters tall, from 1861 to 1863, and touched it up again in 1872. It is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
The model was Joanna Hiffernan, Whistler's Irish partner. The painting is almost all white, with white painted on white. It was a bold idea. Whistler did not want to tell a story or teach a lesson. He wanted to show the beauty of color and shape itself. That is why he later gave it a musical title, "Symphony in White".
In 1862, it was rejected by the Royal Academy in London, and in 1863 it was rejected by the Paris Salon too. But that same year, it was shown at the "Salon of the Rejected", where it caused a stir along with Manet's "Luncheon on the Grass". In 1896, it went to an American collector, and in 1943 his family gave it to the National Gallery of Art.
A young woman stands in a white dress. The curtain is white too. She holds a white flower. Under her feet is an animal skin with a head. The painter called it a "symphony".
At the 1863 Salon of the Rejected, a French critic called this painting a "symphony in white". Whistler seems to have liked the phrase. About ten years later, he began calling it "Symphony in White, No. 1" himself. He later painted No. 2 and No. 3 as well.
In a London gallery, it was shown as "The Woman in White", and people thought it showed a scene from Wilkie Collins's popular novel of the same name. Whistler answered that it "simply represents a girl dressed in white standing in front of a white curtain".
The animal skin at her feet, possibly a wolf or a bear, and the lily in her hand: some scholars see the lily as innocence and the beast as its loss. Others link the picture to paintings of the Virgin Mary. Whistler himself only said it was a picture of a girl, so the mystery remains.
Joanna, the model, also posed for the French Realist painter Courbet. He painted her holding her rich red hair in "Jo, the Beautiful Irish Woman". Joanna appears in masterpieces by two great painters.
