At sunset, a farmer and his wife stop digging potatoes and bow their heads in prayer. The bell from the distant church is the Angelus bell. It rang in the morning, at noon and in the evening to call people to prayer. Millet filled this small canvas with silence and faith.
Millet said the idea came from his grandmother. When the bell rang in the fields, she always made the family stop work and pray for the dead. An American collector ordered the painting but never came to get it. Millet then added the church tower and called it The Angelus.
At an auction in 1889, the Louvre and an American group fought for it. The French side won the bidding at 553,000 francs, but the French state's purchase fell through. So the painting went to the American group and toured the United States. The next year, Alfred Chauchard, a French department store owner, bought it back for 750,000 francs. He later left it to France, and it is now in the Musée d'Orsay.
It is evening. A man and a woman stop work in the field. They hear a church bell and pray. The famous painter Dalí loved this picture. He said, 'Something is hidden under the basket!'
At first, the painting was called 'Prayer for the Potato Crop'. The basket at their feet is full of potatoes. After the buyer never came, Millet added the church tower and changed the title.
The Surrealist painter Salvador Dalí was obsessed with this painting and even wrote a book about it. He thought the basket was once a child's coffin and asked the Louvre to X-ray it. The X-ray showed a box-like shape there. But most experts do not agree that it is a coffin.
The 1889 auction became a fight for national pride, and the French side won the bidding. But the French state's purchase fell through, and the painting went to an American group. People in France were upset. A year later, the store owner Chauchard bought it back and brought it home.
In 1932, a man attacked the painting with a knife in the Louvre. It was repaired, and today it still shows its quiet scene of prayer.
