Whistler was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, and spent part of his childhood in St Petersburg, Russia. He studied art in Paris and worked mainly in London. He believed a painting was about harmony of color and shape, not a story, so he gave his works musical titles like Arrangement in Grey and Black and Nocturne. He loved Japanese ukiyo-e prints and was a leading figure of Japonisme.

“No;—I ask it for the knowledge of a lifetime.”

— James McNeill Whistler, His answer at the Ruskin trial (1878) when asked if he charged 200 guineas for two days' work; from his book The Gentle Art of Making Enemies (1890)(ラスキン裁判(1878年)で「2日の仕事に200ギニーか」と聞かれての答え。
