This is the painter's mother. She sits on a chair and looks to the side. The colors are only grey and black. The painter called it 'Arrangement in Grey and Black'. Later, it was on an American stamp for Mother's Day!

In front of a grey wall, an older woman in black sits in profile and looks quietly ahead. She is Anna, the mother of the painter James McNeill Whistler. Whistler, who was born in America, painted her at his home in London in 1871. Simple colors, straight lines and square shapes are beautifully arranged.
