A rowing champion, and the painter rows in the picture too!
On a calm autumn river, a man in a long, narrow one-person boat rests his oars and turns to look at us. He is Max Schmitt, a rowing champion. His close friend Thomas Eakins painted him. The scene is the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. Two bridges can be seen in the background.
On October 5, 1870, Schmitt won a single sculls race on this river in record time. Eakins came back from studying in Paris that year and chose rowing, a sport he knew well, as his subject. Eakins planned perspective and light very carefully, almost like math.
In Eakins's lifetime, the painting was shown only once, in 1871, and the reviews were mixed. He gave it to Schmitt, and in 1934 it came to the Metropolitan Museum. Today it is known as a masterpiece of American Realism and a great sports painting. It is a heartfelt gift from a painter to his best friend.

The man rowing another single scull in the background is Eakins himself. On the back of his boat, he wrote 'Eakins 1871' as his signature.
Schmitt's boat is named 'Josie', after his sister. You can see the name below his right hand. The painting is full of real names and real things.
Schmitt's race was a three-mile course with one turn. His time was exactly 20 minutes, a record at that time. The scene is said to be near the turning point of that race.
When it was shown in 1871, one critic called it 'a shock to the artistic conventionalities of the city'. Today, that newness is exactly what people admire.
