アメリカのフィラデルフィアに生まれ、生涯のほとんどをそこで過ごしました。パリで絵を学んだあと、医学部で解剖学も学び、人の体を正確に描くことにこだわりました。ボート競技や水泳、手術の場面など、アメリカの今を描いた作品で知られます。写真にも夢中になり、動く人や動物を連続写真で研究しました。
Eakins was born in Philadelphia and spent most of his life there. After studying painting in Paris, he also studied anatomy at a medical school, because he wanted to paint the human body accurately. He is known for scenes of modern American life, such as rowing, swimming and surgery. He also loved photography and studied people and animals in motion with sequence photos.
