Eleven men pull a huge boat! Each one was a real person.
Under the hot sun, eleven men wear leather straps and pull a big boat up the river from the shore. They are burlaki, or barge haulers. Ilya Repin, one of Russia's greatest painters, spent three years on this huge painting, almost three meters wide, while he was still in his twenties.
When Repin was an art student, he saw barge haulers on the Neva River in Saint Petersburg and was shocked. Right next to well-dressed people enjoying themselves, men in rags worked like horses. In the summer of 1870, he traveled on the Volga, met real haulers and made many sketches.
Grand Duke Vladimir, a son of the Russian emperor, bought the finished painting. It was shown at the 1873 World's Fair in Vienna and won a bronze medal. The writer Dostoevsky praised it too. This painting of working people's pain and strength made Repin famous.
Eleven men pull a big boat. They walk on the sand by a river. It is hard work in the hot sun. The painter met these men. Each man in the picture was a real person!

The bearded man at the front, looking at us, was a real hauler named Kanin. He used to be a priest, but he lost that job and became a hauler. Repin wrote that he saw deep wisdom in Kanin's face.
The Russian flag at the top of the boat's mast is said to be upside down. Some people think this gives the picture an uneasy feeling.
Far away on the right, there is a tiny steamboat with smoke. As steamboats spread, the job of pulling boats by hand disappeared. Repin quietly painted a changing age. One small puff of smoke carries a big meaning.
Grand Duke Vladimir is said to have hung the painting in his palace billiard room. It is ironic that a royal enjoyed a picture of poor men's hard work in his game room.
