Laughing out loud while writing rude words to a sultan! It took eleven years.
A crowd of men around a table are laughing loudly. In the middle, a clerk is writing a letter with a quill pen. They are the Zaporozhian Cossacks, brave warriors who lived in what is now Ukraine. According to legend, the Ottoman sultan told them to surrender, and they are writing him a reply full of insults.
The painter, Ilya Repin, was born in Chuhuiv, then in the Russian Empire and now in Ukraine. He started in 1880. He traveled to the region, studied old weapons and costumes, and sketched many people as models. Historians, a general and some of Repin's artist friends served as models. It took him eleven years to finish.
After it was finished, Emperor Alexander III bought it for 35,000 rubles, then the highest price ever paid for a Russian painting. Repin also made a second, slightly smaller unfinished version, now in the Kharkiv Art Museum in Ukraine. It is still loved as one of Repin's best-known works.
Many men laugh around a table. They are Cossacks, brave fighters. In a legend, a sultan told them, 'Give up!' So they write him a funny, rude letter. The painter worked on this picture for eleven years!
The model for the clerk writing the letter was Dmytro Yavornytsky, a historian of the Cossacks. Repin borrowed many materials from him and got his help to make the details right.
One model was the opera singer Fyodor Stravinsky, the father of Igor Stravinsky, the composer of 'The Firebird' and 'The Rite of Spring'. The leader with the pipe in the middle was modeled on General Mikhail Dragomirov.
One of the bald men with his back to us was sketched from behind without the model's permission, it is said. At least his face is not in the picture!
The story of the Cossacks' rude letter to the sultan is famous. But there is no reliable proof that it really happened, and historians still disagree. It has been passed down as a legend.
