朝もやの中、背の高い松の林で、たおれた木の上をクマの親子が遊んでいます。子グマが木によじのぼり、お母さんグマが見守っています。1889年、ロシアの森の画家として名高いシーシキンが森を、友人のサヴィツキーがクマを描きました。ロシアでいちばん有名な絵のひとつです。

In the morning mist, a mother bear and her cubs play on a fallen tree in a forest of tall pines. The cubs climb the tree while the mother watches. In 1889, Ivan Shishkin, famous for painting Russian forests, painted the forest, and his friend Konstantin Savitsky painted the bears. It is one of the most famous paintings in Russia.

もともとは動物のいない森の絵で、サヴィツキーがクマを加えることを提案し、動物画に自信がなかったシーシキンが賛成した、と伝えられています。ただし、だれが最初に構図を考えたのかなど、制作のくわしい経緯には分からない点も残っています。景色は、ロシアのセリゲル湖にある島の森がもとになったと考えられています。

It is said that the forest at first had no animals and that Savitsky suggested adding bears. Shishkin, who did not feel confident painting animals, is said to have agreed. However, some details, such as who first planned the picture, are still uncertain. The forest is believed to be on an island in Lake Seliger in Russia.

画面にはシーシキンの署名と、絵の具で覆われたサヴィツキーの署名の跡があります。買い取った収集家トレチャコフが消させたという話が有名ですが、サヴィツキー自身が覆った可能性もあり、真相は分かっていません。のちにこの絵はチョコレート菓子の包み紙に使われて大人気になり、ロシアでは知らない人はいないほどの絵になりました。

The painting has Shishkin's signature and traces of Savitsky's signature, covered with paint. A famous story says the collector Pavel Tretyakov had it removed, but Savitsky may have covered it himself. Nobody knows for sure. Later, the picture was used on the wrapper of a chocolate candy and became hugely popular. In Russia, almost everyone knows it.
