Only a few minutes of painting a day! Two summers to catch the dusk light.
Two girls in white dresses light paper lanterns in a garden full of lilies, roses and carnations. The air is the soft purple of dusk. The painter is John Singer Sargent, who painted 'Madame X'. After the scandal in Paris, he started this work during a summer in Broadway, a village in the English countryside.
The models were Dolly and Polly, the daughters of the illustrator Fred Barnard. Their blonde hair was perfect for the picture. Like an Impressionist, Sargent painted outdoors, and only for the few minutes when the dusk light was just right. When the flowers died, he used artificial ones. He continued the next summer and finished in the autumn of 1886.
At the 1887 Royal Academy exhibition, some critics called it too French, but it was very popular. That same year, it was bought with a national fund, and it is now at Tate Britain. It was the first work by Sargent bought by a public museum. It is still one of Tate's most popular works.
Two girls are in a garden. They light paper lanterns. It is evening, and the light is soft. The painter worked for only a few minutes every evening. So it took him two summers!
The strange title comes from the chorus of a song, 'Ye Shepherds Tell Me', by Joseph Mazzinghi. The flower names sound like music.
At first, Sargent used the five-year-old daughter of his friend, the American painter Francis Davis Millet, as a model. But her hair was dark, so he switched to the blonde Barnard sisters.
During his work, Sargent cut about 60 cm off the left side of the canvas to make it almost square. That is why the girls and flowers feel so close and cozy.
In 1885, Sargent went boating on the River Thames and saw glowing lanterns hanging in the trees. It is said this gave him the idea for the painting.
