Flamenco fire! Gardner created a dramatic setting for this painting.
In front of a wall, a row of guitarists plays for a dancer in a white skirt. She leans back and stretches out her arm. Strong light from below throws big shadows on the wall. John Singer Sargent, who painted 'Madame X', made this huge work in 1882, when he was about 26. It shows a Spanish Romani dancer performing flamenco with musicians.
In 1879, Sargent spent five months traveling in Spain and North Africa and sketched music and dance. He planned the picture for at least a year. 'Jaleo' means the clapping and shouting that cheer on dancers, or a big noisy fuss. The light, like stage footlights, creates a dramatic mood.
It was a big hit at the 1882 Paris Salon, and the Boston collector Thomas Jefferson Coolidge bought it. Later, the art collector Isabella Stewart Gardner borrowed it, and Coolidge gave it to her. Gardner created a special setting for the painting in her museum's Spanish Cloister.
A woman dances flamenco. Men play guitars, and women clap their hands. The light comes from below. A woman in Boston loved this picture. She made a special place in her museum to show it!

In 1914, Gardner built the Spanish Cloister and gave this painting a special place in it. A Moorish arch works like a frame, so it feels like looking at a real stage.
In 1990, thieves dressed as police officers stole 13 works, including a Vermeer and Rembrandts, from the Gardner Museum. It was one of the biggest art thefts in history. The huge 'El Jaleo' was not taken and still hangs in its place.
