Sargent was born in Florence, Italy, to American parents, and grew up traveling around Europe. He studied in Paris. His fast, confident brushwork and lively portraits of rich and stylish people made him very popular. He left about 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors. During World War I, he also worked as an official war artist.
