A fallen shoulder strap helped shock Paris! The scandal portrait the artist repainted.
A woman in a black dress stands with one hand on a table and turns her head proudly to the side. She is Madame Gautreau, famous for her beauty in Paris society. She was born in Louisiana, in the American South. The painter was John Singer Sargent, a young American portrait artist working in Paris. He was in his late twenties.
Sargent asked Madame Gautreau to pose and made many studies. With only pale skin, a black dress and a brown background, her profile stands out sharply. But at the Salon of 1884, critics attacked her pale skin, her daring pose and the fallen shoulder strap in the first version. It became a big scandal.
After the exhibition, Sargent repainted the strap, but his reputation was hurt, and he soon moved to London. There he became hugely successful, one of the greatest portrait painters of his time. He kept this painting for over thirty years and sold it to the Metropolitan Museum in 1916. He wrote, 'I suppose it is the best thing I have done.'
This woman wears a long black dress. She turns her face to the side. In 1884, people in Paris got angry about this painting. Why? One reason: a strap on her dress fell down! The painter painted it again.

At the Salon, the strap on her right shoulder had slipped down her arm. This was one of the main things people found shocking. Sargent later repainted it up on her shoulder, as we see today. Old photographs show how it first looked.
After the scandal, Sargent began calling the painting 'Madame X' to hide the model's name. At the Salon it was shown as 'Portrait of Madame ***', but many viewers knew who she was.
Sargent also started a second version with almost the same pose. This unfinished painting, with parts of the dress left undone, is now at Tate in London. Comparing them shows how he worked.
Madame Gautreau and her mother were embarrassed by the scandal. They asked Sargent to remove the painting from the Salon, but he refused. It is said her mother came to his studio in tears.
