A woman in a black dress stands with one hand on a table and turns her head proudly to the side. She is Madame Gautreau, famous for her beauty in Paris society. She was born in Louisiana, in the American South. The painter was John Singer Sargent, a young American portrait artist working in Paris. He was in his late twenties.

Fun Fact（訳）
肩ひもは、もともとずり落ちていた！ サロンに出したとき、右肩のひもは腕のほうへずり落ちていました。これも「だらしない」と非難された大きな理由でした。サージェントはあとで肩の上に描き直し、今の姿になりました。当時の写真で、元の姿を確かめることができます。
