Is there a lamp behind it? People checked the back of this glowing moon.
On a dark night, a full moon looks out between the clouds and lights up the Dnieper River with a greenish glow. The painter was Arkhip Kuindzhi, who was born in Mariupol, in today's Ukraine. He made this painting in 1880, and it is now in the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg.
In 1880, the painting was shown at an exhibition with only this one work. The windows were covered with curtains, and in the dark room, a light was aimed only at the painting. The moonlight looked so real that some visitors checked behind the canvas for a hidden lamp. Kuindzhi boldly experimented with his paints, and he placed the horizon low so the sky and light feel huge.
Before the show, Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich, a member of the imperial family, bought the painting for 5,000 rubles. He took it with him on a long voyage on a warship. When it came back, it was scratched and had grown darker. Experts think a tar-like paint called bitumen darkened in the light and sea air. Even so, it is still a legendary Russian landscape.
This is a night by a big river. The moon is bright in the sky. The river shines green. The picture was shown in a dark room. Some people looked behind it for a lamp!

In 1880, an exhibition in Saint Petersburg showed only this painting. It was the first show of its kind in Russia. People waited in long lines and went in group by group. Some came back again and again.
While he was painting it, Kuindzhi opened his studio to visitors on Sundays. The writer Ivan Turgenev came, and so did the chemist Dmitri Mendeleev, famous for the periodic table. Mendeleev even wrote a newspaper article about the painting.
The owner, Grand Duke Konstantin, took the painting on a warship voyage around the Mediterranean and beyond. Kuindzhi strongly objected because of the damp air, and Turgenev advised leaving it in Paris. But the grand duke would not let it go.
To make the light look strong, Kuindzhi used a tar-like paint called bitumen. But bitumen grows darker over time. The moonlight that people saw in 1880 may have been much brighter than what we see today.
