Story草原に、馬に乗った3人の勇士が並び、遠くの敵を見張っています。彼らは、ロシアの古い英雄叙事詩（ブィリーナ）に出てくるヒーロー「ボガトィーリ」。真ん中が力持ちのイリヤ・ムーロメツ、左が賢いドブルイニャ・ニキーティチ、右が若くて機転のきくアリョーシャ・ポポーヴィチです。
Three heroes on horseback stand on a wide plain and watch for enemies. They are bogatyrs, heroes of old Russian epic songs called byliny. In the middle is the strong Ilya Muromets. On the left is wise Dobrynya Nikitich, and on the right is young, clever Alyosha Popovich.
描いたのは、ロシアの昔話や伝説を絵にしたヴァスネツォフ。1881年に本格的に描き始め、少しずつ手を加えながら、1898年にようやく完成させました。モデルには実在の人々を使い、イリヤには農民のイワン・ペトロフの顔を参考にしたと言われます。馬はパトロンのマモントフの屋敷の馬がモデルでした。
The painter, Viktor Vasnetsov, made many pictures of Russian fairy tales and legends. He started working on this painting in 1881 and kept improving it until he finally finished it in 1898. He used real people as models. For Ilya, he is said to have used the face of a peasant named Ivan Petrov. The horses came from the stable of his patron, Savva Mamontov.
完成した1898年、収集家トレチャコフがこの絵を買い上げました。今もトレチャコフ美術館を代表する作品のひとつで、ヴァスネツォフのいちばん有名な絵として知られています。アニメ映画やお菓子、切手など、さまざまな形で親しまれている、ロシアの「ヒーローの絵」の代表です。
In 1898, the year it was finished, the collector Pavel Tretyakov bought it. It is still one of the Tretyakov Gallery's best-known works and Vasnetsov's most famous painting. It is loved in many forms, from animated films to stamps. It is Russia's classic 'hero painting'.

Three heroes sit on their horses. They watch for enemies. The man in the middle is very strong. He looks far away with his hand over his eyes. The painter worked on this picture for about 17 years!

Secrets左のドブルイニャの顔には、ヴァスネツォフ自身の面影があると言われます。美術館の資料でも、画家の顔と似ていることが指摘されています。ただし、モデルにした農民の習作も残っています。
People say Dobrynya, on the left, looks like Vasnetsov himself. Even museum writers have noticed the resemblance. But a sketch of a peasant used as a model for Dobrynya also survives.
右のアリョーシャの顔は、パトロンだった実業家サッヴァ・マモントフの息子アンドレイがモデルだと言われています。マモントフの屋敷は、多くの芸術家が集まる場所でした。
It is said that Alyosha, on the right, was modeled on Andrei, the son of the businessman Savva Mamontov. Mamontov's country house was a meeting place for many artists.
伝説のアリョーシャは、戦うだけでなく歌も得意な陽気な勇士。絵の中でも、弓矢のほかに「グースリ」という弦楽器を馬の鞍に下げています。武器と楽器の両方を持つヒーローです。
In legends, Alyosha is a cheerful hero who can fight and also sing. In the painting, besides his bow and arrows, he carries a gusli, a string instrument, on his saddle. He is a hero with both a weapon and an instrument.
絵は高さ約3メートル、幅約4.5メートルもあります。展示室で見上げると、勇士たちが本当に目の前の丘に立っているような迫力です。1881年から1898年まで、約17年かけた画家のライフワークでした。
The painting is about 3 meters tall and 4.5 meters wide. In the gallery, you look up, and the heroes seem to be standing right in front of you on the hill. It took about 17 years, from 1881 to 1898, and was the artist's life's work.
