ロシアのヴャトカ県の村に、司祭の息子として生まれました。サンクトペテルブルクの美術アカデミーで学び、ロシアの昔話や英雄伝説（ブィリーナ）を題材にした絵で有名になります。三人の英雄が馬に乗って見張りをする『三人の勇士』は、ロシアで最も親しまれている絵の一つです。建物のデザインや教会の壁画も手がけました。
Vasnetsov was born in a village in Vyatka province, Russia. His father was a priest. He studied at the Academy of Arts in St Petersburg and became famous for paintings based on Russian folk tales and hero legends called byliny. Bogatyrs, showing three heroes on horseback keeping watch, is one of the best-loved paintings in Russia. He also designed buildings and painted church murals.
