Toy knights? A strange battle by a painter obsessed with perspective.
This painting shows the Battle of San Romano, fought in 1432 between the armies of Florence and Siena. The man on the white horse in a big red and gold hat is Niccolò da Tolentino, the Florentine commander. It was once one of a set of three large panels. The other two are in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence and the Louvre in Paris.
Uccello was a painter who was crazy about perspective, the way of drawing faraway things smaller to show depth. The broken lances and a fallen soldier on the ground are lined up along lines that lead into the distance. Yet the horses look as stiff as rocking horses, and the hills behind are very steep. It is a strange world, half real and half toy-like.
The panels were ordered by the Bartolini Salimbeni family of Florence. Around 1484, Lorenzo de' Medici had all three taken from the family's house by force and hung them in his own palace. Today the three panels are split between London, Florence and Paris, but they are still loved as great Renaissance battle paintings.
This is a battle in Italy. Knights ride horses and hold long lances. The leader wears a big red hat. Long ago, the armor was shiny silver. Now the silver is dark gray.
The soldiers' armor was once covered with real silver leaf. It must have shone brightly when the painting was new. But silver darkens over time, so now it looks gray or black. The gold decorations, however, are still bright.
“Uccello” means “bird” in Italian. His real name was Paolo di Dono. According to the writer Vasari, he loved painting birds and animals and filled his home with pictures of them, so people called him “Bird.”
Vasari says that Uccello studied perspective late into the night. When his wife called him to bed, he answered, “Oh, what a sweet thing perspective is!” The story may be a little exaggerated, but it shows how much he loved it.
The three panels first belonged to the Bartolini Salimbeni family. But around 1484, Lorenzo de' Medici, the most powerful man in Florence, had all three taken from the family's house by force and put them in his own palace. Great paintings were treasures that powerful people wanted.

Broken lances
The fallen lances are lined up along lines going into the distance. This is Uccello's experiment with perspective.
A fallen soldier
In the lower left, a soldier in armor lies pointing into the distance. Uccello tried a difficult way of drawing the body shortened by perspective.
