Storyヨルダン川で、洗礼者ヨハネがイエスの頭に水を注ぎ、洗礼をさずけている場面です。イエスの頭上には、神の霊を表す白い鳩。左の木のそばでは3人の天使が見守り、右うしろでは次に洗礼を受ける男が服をぬいでいます。すべてが止まったような、静かで澄んだ空気に包まれた絵です。
In the River Jordan, John the Baptist pours water over Jesus's head to baptize him. Above Jesus is a white dove, a symbol of the Holy Spirit. On the left, three angels watch by a tree. Behind, on the right, a man who will be baptized next is taking off his shirt. Everything seems to stand still in the calm, clear air.
作者のピエロ・デッラ・フランチェスカは、画家であると同時に、遠近法や幾何学の本を書いた数学者でもありました。イエスの体は画面の中心線にそってまっすぐ置かれ、木や人物の配置にも、計算された比率が使われていると言われます。明るい色とくっきりした形が、この絵に永遠の静けさをあたえています。
Piero della Francesca was a painter and also a mathematician who wrote books on perspective and geometry. Jesus stands straight on the center line of the picture, and the trees and figures are said to be placed using careful proportions. The light colors and clear shapes give the painting a timeless calm.
この絵は、ピエロの故郷サンセポルクロにあったサン・ジョヴァンニ・バッティスタ・イン・ヴァル・ダフラ教会のために描かれました。1460年代には、別の画家マッテオ・ディ・ジョヴァンニが両わきの絵などを加え、この絵は大きな祭壇画の中央になりました。うしろの白い町は、サンセポルクロではないかと言われます。1861年、ロンドンのナショナル・ギャラリーが買い取りました。
The painting was made for the church of San Giovanni Battista in Val d'Afra in Sansepolcro, Piero's hometown. In the 1460s, another painter, Matteo di Giovanni, added side panels and other parts, and Piero's picture became the center of a larger altarpiece. The white town in the background may be Sansepolcro itself. The National Gallery in London bought the painting in 1861.

The white dove above Jesus is painted from the front with its wings spread. Its shape and color look just like the white clouds in the sky. It is as if the Holy Spirit has quietly come down as part of nature.
ピエロは『絵画の遠近法について』など、数学の本を何冊も書きました。サイコロのような正多面体の研究でも知られ、数学の歴史にも名前が残っています。数学の研究は、絵の形や配置を正確に考える助けになったのかもしれません。
Piero wrote several books on mathematics, including one on perspective in painting. He also studied regular solid shapes, like dice, and his name appears in the history of math. His math studies may have helped him plan the exact shapes and layout of his paintings.
左に立つ白い幹の木は、クルミの木だと考えられています。その白さはイエスの白い肌と呼応しています。この木は、画面を美しい比率で分ける位置に立っているとも言われます。
The tree with the white trunk on the left is thought to be a walnut tree. Its whiteness echoes Jesus's pale skin. Some say it stands exactly where it divides the picture into beautiful proportions.
伝記作家ヴァザーリによると、ピエロは年をとって目が見えなくなったそうです。光と色の名人にとって、なんともつらい話です。ただし本当かどうかははっきりしておらず、晩年まで数学の本を書いていたこともわかっています。
According to the writer Vasari, Piero went blind in old age — a sad fate for a master of light and color. But no one is sure it is true, and we know he was still writing math books late in life.
