この作品のお話
Story受胎告知は、天使ガブリエルがおとめマリアのもとを訪れ、「あなたは神の子を身ごもります」と告げる場面です。この絵はフィレンツェのサン・マルコ修道院で、2階の修道士の部屋へ続く階段をのぼりきった正面の壁に、1440〜1445年ごろフラ・アンジェリコが描きました。
The Annunciation shows the angel Gabriel visiting the Virgin Mary. He tells her she will have the Son of God. Fra Angelico painted this around 1440–1445 in the convent of San Marco in Florence. It is on the wall at the top of the stairs that lead to the monks' rooms.
場面は、柱が並ぶ回廊（屋根つきの廊下）です。天使とマリアは、どちらも体の前で腕を交差させ、静かにおじぎし合っています。光はやわらかく、色は明るく、余計なものは何もありません。修道士が祈りに集中できるよう、静けさを大切にした絵です。ぬれたしっくいに手早く描くフレスコなので、描き直しはほとんどできません。
The scene is set in a loggia, a covered walkway with columns. The angel and Mary both cross their arms in front of their bodies and bow quietly. The light is soft, the colours are bright, and nothing extra is shown. The painting is calm so the monks can focus on prayer. It is a fresco, painted quickly on wet plaster, so it was hard to make changes.
修道院は、メディチ家のコジモの支援で建築家ミケロッツォが建て直しました。絵の回廊も、実際の修道院の建物によく似ています。今は美術館となり、修道士の小部屋をめぐりながら、フラ・アンジェリコと弟子たちが描いた壁画を一つずつじっくり見ることができます。
The convent was rebuilt by the architect Michelozzo with money from Cosimo de' Medici. The loggia in the painting looks like the real building. Today the convent is a museum. You can walk through the monks' small rooms and see the frescoes by Fra Angelico and his helpers one by one.
天使がマリアを訪ねます。天使には虹色の翼があります。二人とも静かにおじぎしています。この絵はフィレンツェの壁にあります。修道士たちは毎日これを見て、お祈りをしました。
An angel visits Mary. The angel has rainbow wings. They both bow quietly. This picture is on a wall in Florence. Monks saw it every day and said a prayer.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets絵の下には、ラテン語で「けがれなきおとめの姿の前を通るとき、アヴェ（祈りの言葉）を忘れないように」と書かれています。修道士たちが毎日この前を通るたびに、祈りをささげるための絵だったのです。
Under the painting, Latin words say: when you pass the image of the Virgin, do not forget to say an Ave. The monks walked by it every day, and it reminded them to pray.
フラ・アンジェリコは本名ではなく、「天使のような修道士」という意味のあだ名です。本名はグイド・ディ・ピエトロ。信仰あつく、1982年には教皇ヨハネ・パウロ2世によって「福者」とされました。
Fra Angelico is a nickname meaning 'the angelic friar'. His real name was Guido di Pietro. He was very religious. In 1982, Pope John Paul II declared him 'Blessed'.
サン・マルコ修道院の修道士の小部屋（僧房）にも、一つひとつ壁画が描かれています。そのうち第3僧房にも、フラ・アンジェリコによるもっとシンプルな『受胎告知』があります。見くらべると、場所に合わせた描き分けがわかります。
Each small monk's room in San Marco also has a fresco. In Cell 3, there is another, simpler Annunciation by Fra Angelico. Compare them to see how he changed his style for each place.
左の木の柵で囲まれた庭は、「閉ざされた庭」と呼ばれるキリスト教のシンボル。けがれのないマリアをあらわします。花が咲く庭は、エデンの園を思わせるとも言われます。何気ない背景にも、意味がこめられているのです。
The garden behind the wooden fence on the left is called the 'enclosed garden'. It is a Christian symbol of Mary's purity. The flowering garden may also remind us of the Garden of Eden.
