Why are they shown from the side? A famous Renaissance couple facing each other.
This is a diptych, a pair of panels that face each other. The left panel shows the duchess, Battista Sforza, and the right panel shows her husband, Federico da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino. Both are painted from the side. She has very pale skin and wears pearls. He wears a red hat and red clothes. Across a wide landscape, the two quietly look at each other.
Portraits in profile followed the style of ancient Roman coins and medals, and they looked noble. Behind the couple, a wide landscape, like the lands they ruled, runs across both panels. The faraway hills and lakes look hazy because Piero tried to paint even the thickness of the air. He painted it in oils, a method developed in northern Europe.
On the back, each of them rides in a triumphal chariot. The duke's chariot is pulled by white horses, and the duchess's by unicorns. Battista died young in 1472, in her twenties, so this portrait may have been painted after her death. In 1631, the panels came to Florence with the woman who inherited the Urbino family's treasures.
Here are a duke and a duchess. They are husband and wife. They look at each other from the side. He wears a red hat. He lost his right eye, so we only see his left side.
When he was young, Federico lost his right eye in a jousting tournament. So in portraits, he is always shown from his unhurt left side. There is also a story that the deep dip at the top of his nose is because he had the bone cut away to see better with his left eye.
Battista's face is painted so white that it hardly looks alive. Some say pale skin was simply the ideal of beauty then. But she died in 1472, so others think the portrait was painted after her death, perhaps from a mask or other likeness.
On the back of the panels, the couple ride in a victory parade. White horses pull the duke's chariot, and unicorns, a symbol of purity, pull the duchess's. Latin verses praise them both.
Piero della Francesca also wrote books on perspective and on the geometry of solid shapes. He is known as a mathematician too. Federico invited him to his court and supported learning and art. The court of Urbino became one of the great cultural centers of Europe.
