美術館アンテナ：レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチの作品に会える展覧会この作品のお話
Story天使ガブリエルがひざまずき、聖母マリアに「あなたは神の子を身ごもります」と告げる場面です。天使の手には、清らかさを表す白いユリ。マリアは読みかけの本に手を置いたまま、静かに左手を上げて驚きを表しています。レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチが20歳ごろ、師匠ヴェロッキオの工房にいたころの作品と考えられています。
The angel Gabriel kneels and tells the Virgin Mary that she will have the Son of God. He holds a white lily, a symbol of purity. Mary keeps one hand on her open book and quietly raises her left hand in surprise. Leonardo da Vinci is thought to have painted this at about 20, while he was working in the studio of his teacher, Verrocchio.
若いレオナルドの観察力は、すでにずば抜けていました。天使の翼は本物の鳥の翼を研究して描かれ、足もとの草花も一本一本ていねいに描き分けられています。遠くの山や港は青くかすみ、空気の層を感じさせます。マリアの前の書見台は、ヴェロッキオが作ったメディチ家の墓の飾りによく似ていて、師匠の影響が見てとれます。
Young Leonardo already had amazing powers of observation. He studied real bird wings to paint the angel's wings, and he painted each flower in the grass with care. The faraway mountains and harbor fade into blue haze, so we can feel the layers of air. The stand in front of Mary looks like the decoration on a Medici tomb by Verrocchio, which shows his teacher's influence.
この絵は長いあいだフィレンツェ近くの修道院にあり、1867年にウフィツィ美術館へ移されました。そのころは別の画家の作品と考えられていましたが、やがてレオナルドの初期の作品とみなされるようになります。形の少しのぎこちなさもふくめて、天才の出発点を知ることができる大切な一枚です。
For a long time, this painting hung in a monastery near Florence. In 1867, it was moved to the Uffizi. At that time, people thought another artist had painted it, but soon it was recognized as an early work by Leonardo. With its small awkward details, it shows us where a genius began.
天使が庭にいるマリアをたずねます。神さまからの大切な知らせを持ってきたのです。天使は白い花を持っています。レオナルドは20歳ごろにこれを描きました。あとで、だれかが天使の翼を長くしてしまいました！

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secretsガブリエルの翼は、もとは鳥の翼のように短く、リアルなものでした。ところが後の時代に別の人が、翼を長く描きたしてしまいました。よく見ると、翼の先が背景の景色にかさなって、色も少しちがっています。
Gabriel's wings were first short and realistic, like a bird's. But later, someone else painted them longer. If you look closely, the wing tips cover part of the landscape, and the color is a little different.
マリアの右腕が長すぎるなど、この絵には形のくるいがあると言われてきました。けれども、絵を右ななめ下から見るとくるいが目立たなくなる、という説があります。教会で決まった角度から見られることを考えて描いたのかもしれません。
People have long said that some shapes look wrong, such as Mary's right arm, which seems too long. But one theory says the problems disappear when you look from the lower right. Leonardo may have planned it to be seen from a certain angle in a church.
マリアの前にある大理石の書見台は、師匠ヴェロッキオがフィレンツェのサン・ロレンツォ聖堂に作った、メディチ家の墓の飾りとよく似ています。弟子のレオナルドが、師匠のデザインを絵の中で使ったと考えられています。
The marble stand in front of Mary looks very much like a Medici tomb that Verrocchio made for the church of San Lorenzo in Florence. Leonardo probably used his teacher's design in his painting.
この絵がウフィツィ美術館に来た1867年には、同じ時代の画家ギルランダイオの作品と考えられていました。レオナルドの名前が出てきたのは、その少しあとのことです。今では、若きレオナルドの代表作として世界中から人が見に来ます。
When the painting came to the Uffizi in 1867, people believed it was by Ghirlandaio, another painter of the time. Leonardo's name was suggested a little later. Today, people from all over the world come to see it as a great early work by Leonardo.

遠くの山は青白くかすんでいます。遠いものほど青く、ぼんやり描く工夫です。
The faraway mountains fade into pale blue. The farther away things are, the bluer and softer they are painted.
