Storyサルバトール・ムンディはラテン語で「世界の救い主」という意味。イエス・キリストが右手で祝福し、左手に地球をあらわす透明な玉を持つ姿です。1500年ごろ、レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチが描いたとされますが、弟子や工房の作品ではないかと考える専門家もいて、いまも議論が続いています。
Salvator Mundi means 'Saviour of the World' in Latin. Jesus raises his right hand to bless, and holds a clear ball in his left hand. The ball stands for the world. It is said that Leonardo da Vinci painted it around 1500. But some experts think his students or workshop made it, and the debate continues.
この絵は長いあいだ、レオナルドの弟子の作品と思われ、ひどく傷んで上からぬり直されていました。2005年に美術商が買い取り、修復家ダイアン・モデスティーニが何年もかけて修復しました。2011年、ロンドンのナショナル・ギャラリーのレオナルド展で「新発見のレオナルド」として公開され、大きな話題になりました。
For a long time, people thought a student of Leonardo had painted it. It was badly damaged and painted over. Art dealers bought it in 2005, and the restorer Dianne Modestini worked on it for years. In 2011, it was shown at the National Gallery in London as a 'new Leonardo', and it made big news.
2017年に史上最高額で落札されたあと、アラブ首長国連邦のルーヴル・アブダビで公開される予定でしたが、2018年に延期が発表され、その後も公開は実現していません。持ち主はサウジアラビアの皇太子だと報道されていますが、絵はその後、公の場に出ていません。「世界一高い絵」は、いま「世界一見られない絵」でもあるのです。
After its record sale in 2017, it was due to be shown at the Louvre Abu Dhabi. But in 2018 the display was postponed, and it has still not taken place. News reports say the owner is the crown prince of Saudi Arabia. Since then, it has not been seen in public. The world's most expensive painting is now one of the hardest to see.

In 2017, it sold at Christie's in New York for about 450.3 million dollars, including fees. It is still said to be the highest price ever paid for a painting.
2005年、ひどく傷んで上からぬりつぶされていたこの絵は、アメリカのニューオーリンズの小さなオークションで、美術商たちにわずか1175ドルで買われました。1958年にもロンドンで45ポンドで売られた記録があります。
In 2005, the painting was badly damaged and painted over. Art dealers bought it at a small auction in New Orleans for just 1,175 dollars. In 1958, it had sold in London for only 45 pounds.
左手の透明な玉は、本物の水晶なら、うしろの服がゆがんで逆さまに見えるはずです。ところが、ほとんどゆがんでいません。光の研究をしたレオナルドがこう描くのはおかしい、とうたがう人もいれば、わざと単純にしたという説もあります。
A real crystal ball would make the clothes behind it look bent and upside down. But here, they hardly change. Some say Leonardo, who studied light, would not paint it this way. Others think he simplified it on purpose.
修復で上ぬりを取りのぞくと、右手の親指が、最初は別の位置に描かれていたあと（描き直しのあと）が見つかりました。画家が描きながら構図を考え直した証拠として注目されています。ただし、これだけでレオナルド本人の作とは言えず、作者をめぐる議論は続いています。
When restorers removed later paint, they found the right thumb had first been painted in a different place. This shows that the painter changed his mind while working. But it does not prove that Leonardo himself painted it, and experts still disagree.

A crystal ball stands for the world. Small sparkles are inside, but the view through it is hardly bent.
4組みひもの模様Knot patterns
胸の金色の帯には、こまかい組みひもの模様。レオナルドが好んだデザインに似ています。
The gold bands on his chest have detailed knot patterns, like designs Leonardo liked.
