Story赤い帽子をかぶり、巻き毛の若い男性が、右のほうを見つめています。右下の手には、折りたたんだ楽譜。レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチがミラノで描いたと考えられる肖像画で、レオナルドの作とされる絵のうち、男性を描いた肖像画はこれだけです（作者についてはほかの画家とする意見もあります）。
A young man with a red cap and curly hair looks off to the right. In his hand at the bottom right, he holds a folded sheet of music. This portrait is thought to have been painted by Leonardo da Vinci in Milan. It is the only portrait of a man among the paintings credited to Leonardo, although some experts think another artist painted it.
レオナルドは1482年ごろ、ミラノの支配者ルドヴィーコ・スフォルツァに仕えるため、フィレンツェからミラノに移りました。顔は光と影でていねいに仕上げられていますが、服や肩かけはずっとざっと描かれています。未完成なのか、助手などがかかわったのかは意見が分かれています。モデルはミラノ大聖堂の聖歌隊長ガッフーリオなどの名前が挙がっていますが、決まっていません。
Around 1482, Leonardo moved from Florence to Milan to work for its ruler, Ludovico Sforza. The face is carefully finished with light and shadow, but the clothes and the stole are only roughly painted. Experts disagree on whether these parts are unfinished or were painted by an assistant. The sitter has been linked to Franchino Gaffurio, the choirmaster of Milan Cathedral, and others, but no one is sure.
この絵は長いあいだ、ミラノ公ルドヴィーコの肖像だと考えられていました。ところが1904〜05年の修復で、上からぬられていた絵の具を取りのぞくと、楽譜を持つ手が現れたのです。それ以来「音楽家の肖像」とよばれています。今はミラノのアンブロジアーナ絵画館にあります。
For a long time, people thought it was a portrait of Duke Ludovico. But during restoration in 1904–05, later paint was removed, and a hand holding music appeared. Since then it has been called 'Portrait of a Musician'. It is now in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana in Milan.
この若い男性は赤い帽子をかぶっています。髪は巻き毛です。手に楽譜を持っています。昔、だれかが手と楽譜を絵の具でかくしてしまいました。1905年ごろ、ふたたび見つかったのです。

Secretsこの絵は長いあいだミラノ公の肖像とされていました。ところが1904〜05年の修復で、後からぬられた絵の具の下から、楽譜を持つ手が出てきました。公爵から一転、音楽家の肖像になったのです。
For a long time, this was called a portrait of the Duke of Milan. But in 1904–05, restorers found a hand holding sheet music under later paint. The duke suddenly became a musician.
画家の伝記を書いたヴァザーリによると、レオナルドがミラノへ行ったのは、自作の銀の竪琴を演奏する音楽家としてでした。その竪琴は馬の頭の骨の形をしていたと伝えられます。
According to Vasari, who wrote the lives of artists, Leonardo first went to Milan as a musician playing a silver lyre he had made. The lyre is said to have been shaped like a horse's skull.
楽譜には昔の書き方の音符や文字がかすかに見えます。多くの研究者が曲を読み解こうとしてきましたが、何の曲なのか、まだはっきりわかっていません。なぞ好きのレオナルドらしい謎です。
Old-style notes and letters can be seen faintly on the sheet. Many researchers have tried to read the piece, but no one knows for sure what music it is. It is a fitting puzzle for Leonardo, who loved riddles.
顔はやわらかな光と影でみごとに仕上げられていますが、黄色い肩かけや服は筆のあとが残るほどざっとしています。服の部分が未完成なのか、別の画家が描いたのかは、意見が分かれています。
The face is beautifully finished with soft light and shadow. But the yellow stole and clothes are rough, with visible brushstrokes. Experts disagree on whether these parts are unfinished or were painted by another artist.

黄土色の肩かけは、筆あとが見えるほどざっとした仕上がり。未完成のまま残された可能性があります。
The ochre stole is painted roughly, with brushstrokes showing. It may have been left unfinished.
