Introduction

Painter, scientist, inventor, engineer. Leonardo da Vinci lived in Italy more than 500 years ago and is called a 'universal genius.' He painted the mysterious smile of the Mona Lisa and the dramatic moment of The Last Supper. Yet fewer than 20 paintings are thought to be by him. That is because his interests went far beyond painting.

How birds fly, how water swirls, how the human body works, machines that fly. Leonardo wrote down everything that caught his interest, and about 7,000 pages of his notes survive. Much of it is in mirror writing, which looks normal when you hold it up to a mirror! From the theft of the Mona Lisa to the most expensive painting ever sold, let's look inside a genius's mind.

Highlights
1

Notebooks full of mirror writing!

Leonardo was left-handed and wrote many notes from right to left in mirror writing. No one knows exactly why. One idea is that it kept his hand from smudging the ink.

2

Flying machines 500 years ago

His notebooks show many invention ideas, like a flying machine with bird-like wings and a spiral 'aerial screw.' But most of them were probably never built.

3

Why The Last Supper is fragile

Wall paintings were usually done in fresco, on wet plaster. But Leonardo tried an experimental method on a dry wall so he could work slowly. The paint began to flake soon after, and it has been restored many times.

4

Stolen, then world-famous!?

In 1911, an Italian man who had worked at the Louvre stole the Mona Lisa. Newspapers went wild, and people even came to see the empty wall. It was found in Florence about two years later and became more famous than ever.

5

Sfumato: soft as smoke

There are no sharp lines around the Mona Lisa's mouth and eyes. Leonardo used sfumato, building up thin layers of paint to blur edges like smoke. That is why her expression looks soft and mysterious.
