美術館アンテナ：レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチの作品に会える展覧会この作品のお話
Storyこの肖像画のモデルは、ミラノの宮廷にいた若い女性チェチーリア・ガッレラーニです。描かれたとき、彼女は16歳ごろだったと考えられています。レオナルドは、ミラノの君主ルドヴィーコ・スフォルツァに仕えていたころ、1489〜1491年ごろにこの絵を描きました。レオナルドが描いた女性の肖像画は、世界に4点しかありません。
The model for this portrait is Cecilia Gallerani, a young woman at the court of Milan. She was probably about 16 years old. Leonardo painted it around 1489–1491, when he worked for Ludovico Sforza, the ruler of Milan. Only four portraits of women by Leonardo exist.
チェチーリアは体を左に向けながら、顔は右へふり向いています。まるでだれかに呼ばれたような、動きのある一瞬です。腕の中の白貂も同じ方向を向き、彼女の手と白貂の前足がよく似た形に描かれています。白貂は「清らかさ」のシンボルでもありました。背景はもともと、今よりも明るい色だったと考えられています。
Cecilia's body turns one way, but her face turns the other way. It is as if someone just called her name. The ermine in her arms looks the same way. Her hand and its paw look alike. The ermine was also a symbol of purity. The background was probably lighter in colour at first.
この絵は1800年ごろ、ポーランドのチャルトリスキ家が手に入れました。今の暗い背景は、のちの時代にぬり重ねられたものと考えられています。戦争で何度も移動しながら生き延び、今はクラクフのチャルトリスキ美術館で、ポーランドの宝として展示されています。
Around 1800, the Czartoryski family in Poland got this painting. The dark background was probably painted over later by someone else. It survived many moves during wars. Today it is shown in the Czartoryski Museum in Kraków as a national treasure of Poland.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets左上に「LA BELE FERONIERE（美しき金物屋の妻）」と書かれていますが、これはあとから別の人が書き足したもの。ルーヴルにあるレオナルドの別の肖像画『ミラノの貴婦人の肖像（ラ・ベル・フェロニエール）』と取りちがえたと考えられています。
The top left says 'LA BELE FERONIERE', but someone added it later. They probably mixed it up with another Leonardo portrait in the Louvre, called La Belle Ferronnière.
古代ギリシャ語で、白貂などイタチのなかまは「ガレー」。モデルの名字ガッレラーニにかけたしゃれだと考えられています。また、ミラノの君主ルドヴィーコ・スフォルツァは1488年に白貂勲章を受け、「白貂」とも呼ばれました。そのため、恋人だった彼をあらわすという説もあります。
In ancient Greek, 'galê' meant a weasel-like animal. Many experts think the ermine is a pun on her family name, Gallerani. Also, Ludovico Sforza, the ruler of Milan, received the Order of the Ermine in 1488 and was called 'the White Ermine'. So the animal may also stand for him, the man she loved.
第二次世界大戦中、ポーランドを支配したナチス・ドイツの総督ハンス・フランクは、この絵を自分の部屋にかざっていました。戦争が終わると、ドイツのバイエルンにあった彼の家で見つかり、ポーランドへ戻されました。
During World War II, the Nazi ruler of occupied Poland, Hans Frank, hung this painting in his office. After the war, it was found at his house in Bavaria, Germany, and returned to Poland.
絵はチャルトリスキ家のコレクションでしたが、2016年、ポーランド政府がこの絵をふくむコレクション全体を約1億ユーロで買い取りました。この絵一枚の価値よりずっと安い、と話題になりました。
The painting belonged to the Czartoryski family collection. In 2016, the Polish government bought the whole collection, including this painting, for about 100 million euros. Many said it was a bargain, even for this one painting alone.
