The only Leonardo painting in the Americas — and the tree behind her is a pun on her name!
This is a portrait of Ginevra de' Benci, the daughter of a rich banking family in Florence. She has heavy eyelids, tightly closed lips and skin as smooth as china. She does not smile, and she seems lost in thought. It is thought to be the earliest surviving portrait by Leonardo, painted in his twenties.
The spiky tree behind her is a juniper, called ginepro in Italian — a play on her name, Ginevra. Placing a sitter in front of an outdoor landscape and turning the face slightly to the side was still new in Italy at that time. To make the skin look soft, Leonardo sometimes blended the paint with his fingers.
At some point, the bottom of the painting was cut off. Her hands, resting at her waist, were probably painted there too. The portrait belonged to the princes of Liechtenstein for many years. In 1967, the National Gallery of Art in Washington bought it for a record price. It is still the only painting by Leonardo in the Americas.
This young woman is Ginevra. Leonardo painted her more than 500 years ago. Look at the dark tree behind her. In Italian, its name sounds like her name! This is the only Leonardo painting in America.
The spiky tree in the background is a juniper, or ginepro in Italian. It sounds a lot like Ginevra. Instead of writing her name, Leonardo quietly tells us who she is with a plant.
Marks where Leonardo spread the paint with his fingers remain on the surface, and in some places fingerprints have been found. He used his fingers, not just brushes, to make the skin look soft. Traces of a genius's hand from over 500 years ago are still there.
On the back of the panel, a sprig of juniper is circled by laurel and palm leaves, with a Latin motto meaning “Beauty adorns virtue.” Both sides of the panel praise Ginevra's name and character.
In 1967, the National Gallery of Art in Washington bought this painting from the Prince of Liechtenstein for more than five million dollars. It is said to have been the highest price ever paid for a single painting at that time.
