This young woman is Ginevra. Leonardo painted her more than 500 years ago. Look at the dark tree behind her. In Italian, its name sounds like her name! This is the only Leonardo painting in America.
This is a portrait of Ginevra de' Benci, the daughter of a rich banking family in Florence. She has heavy eyelids, tightly closed lips and skin as smooth as china. She does not smile, and she seems lost in thought. It is thought to be the earliest surviving portrait by Leonardo, painted in his twenties.
