Are the three kings members of the Medici family? And is the painter himself on the right?
Three wise men, or kings, from the East bring gifts to the newborn Jesus. Mary, Jesus and Joseph are under a half-ruined building, and people in colorful clothes crowd around them. Botticelli, famous for The Birth of Venus, painted this when he was about 30.
The painting was ordered by a Florentine banker, Gaspare del Lama, for the altar of his family chapel in the church of Santa Maria Novella. Several figures are thought to be members of the Medici family, who had great power in the city. Del Lama may have wanted to show his ties to this powerful family. The old man kneeling at Jesus's feet has long been identified as Cosimo, who built the Medici's power.
Cosimo and his sons, who are thought to be the models for the three kings, had already died when this was painted. But his grandsons, Lorenzo and Giuliano, are believed to appear as they looked in life. After this, Botticelli became closely linked with the Medici and went on to paint masterpieces such as Primavera.
Three kings bring gifts to baby Jesus. Many people come to see him. Some people think the kings look like men from a rich family, the Medici. Look at the man in orange on the right. He may be Botticelli, the painter!
The old man at Jesus's feet has long been identified as Cosimo de' Medici. Some experts think the other two kings are his sons, Piero and Giovanni. If so, all three had already died when the picture was painted.
The young man at the far right in an orange cloak, staring straight at us, is believed to be Botticelli himself. He turns away from the holy scene and meets our eyes. He looks a little proud, maybe even cheeky.
In the crowd on the right, an older man with gray hair in a blue robe looks out at us. He is thought to be the client, Gaspare del Lama. He got himself into the same picture as the powerful Medici family.
Botticelli's real name was Alessandro Filipepi. “Botticelli” is a nickname meaning “little barrel.” It is said that his older brother was called this first, and then the name passed to Sandro too.
