Botticelli was born in Florence and probably trained with the painter Filippo Lippi. The Medici family and their circle loved his work. He is known for The Birth of Venus and Primavera, which show ancient myths with beautiful, flowing lines. He also painted frescoes on the walls of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. His popularity faded in his later years, and after his death he was forgotten for a long time.
