Story円い画面の中で、聖母マリアがひざに幼子イエスをだき、天使たちが広げた本に羽根ペンで文字を書いています。頭の上では2人の天使が星のついた冠をささげ、上からは金色の光がふりそそぎます。書いているのは、聖書にある聖母の賛歌「マニフィカト（わが魂は主をあがめ）」。それがこの絵の名前になりました。
In a round picture, the Virgin Mary holds the Christ Child on her lap and writes with a quill pen in a book held by angels. Above her head, two angels hold a crown of stars, and golden rays shine down from above. She is writing the Magnificat, Mary's song of praise in the Bible, which gives the painting its name.
フィレンツェの画家ボッティチェリが1480年代のはじめに描きました。円い形の絵（トンド）は、当時フィレンツェの家でとても人気がありました。金をたっぷり使い、髪の毛やヴェール、服のふちどりにまで細い金の線を入れています。マリアが手にしたザクロに、幼子イエスが手をのせています。たくさんの種を持つこの実は、キリストの受難や復活を表すしるしとされます。
The Florentine painter Botticelli painted it in the early 1480s. Round paintings, or tondi, were very popular in Florentine homes at the time. He used a lot of gold, adding thin golden lines even to the hair, veils and edges of the clothes. The Christ Child touches a pomegranate held by Mary. This fruit with many seeds is a sign of Christ's Passion and Resurrection.
大きさは直径約1.2メートル。今はウフィツィ美術館の、ボッティチェリの名作が集まる展示室にあります。『ヴィーナスの誕生』や『春』と同じ部屋で見られることもあり、宗教画の名手としてのボッティチェリを代表する作品です。その優美な構図は何世紀にもわたって愛され、多くの写しも作られてきました。
It is about 1.2 meters across. Today it hangs in the Uffizi, in the rooms where Botticelli's masterpieces are gathered, near The Birth of Venus and Primavera. It shows Botticelli as a master of religious painting. Its graceful design has been admired for centuries, and many copies have been made.

On the right page of the book, Mary's song begins with the Latin word 'Magnificat', meaning 'magnifies'. On the left page, you can see the start of another song, the Benedictus of Zechariah.
マリアが支え、幼子が手をのせるザクロは、赤い種がぎっしりつまった果物です。キリスト教では、キリストの受難と復活、または多くの信者が1つにまとまる教会を表すと考えられてきました。ボッティチェリはほかの聖母子の絵にもザクロを描いています。
The Child touches a pomegranate held by Mary, a fruit full of red seeds. In Christian art, it can stand for Christ's suffering and resurrection, or for the Church, which joins many believers into one. Botticelli also painted pomegranates in other pictures of the Madonna and Child.
人物たちは、まるで丸い凸面鏡に映ったように、円のふちに沿ってカーブしながら並んでいます。円い画面を最大限に生かすための、ボッティチェリの工夫です。窓の外の景色まで、円の中にきゅっとおさめられています。
The figures curve along the edge of the circle, as if seen in a round convex mirror. This was Botticelli's way of making the most of the round shape. Even the landscape outside the window fits neatly inside the circle.
天使たちのモデルは、フィレンツェを治めたメディチ家の若者たちだという言い伝えがあります。ボッティチェリはメディチ家と深いつながりがありましたが、この説には確かな証拠はありません。
There is a story that the angels were modeled on young members of the Medici family, who ruled Florence. Botticelli was close to the Medici, but there is no firm evidence for this.
