Flowers spill from her mouth!? A spring myth filled with about 500 plants.
Primavera means 'spring' in Italian. Gods from Greek and Roman myths stand in a grove of orange trees. Botticelli painted it around 1480. It is a large painting on wood, two meters tall and over three meters wide. Today it hangs in the Uffizi in Florence, in the same room as The Birth of Venus.
Read it from right to left like a story. Zephyr, the west wind, catches the nymph Chloris, who turns into Flora, goddess of flowers. In the center is Venus, goddess of love, with blindfolded Cupid above her. On the left, the Three Graces dance in a circle. Mercury, the messenger god, pushes away clouds with his staff.
We know this painting hung in the house of Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco, a member of the Medici family. Some think it was made for his wedding. The exact meaning is still a mystery. Experts read it as a love story, as philosophy or as advice for a marriage.

Researchers count about 500 plants in the painting, and about 190 of them have flowers. The Uffizi says at least 42 different species can be identified. Many of them really bloom around Florence in spring.
On the right, the blue west wind, Zephyr, catches the nymph Chloris. Flowers come out of her mouth, and next to her she turns into Flora, goddess of flowers. The scene comes from the Roman poet Ovid.
The trees are full of golden oranges. Oranges were linked to the Medici, the family who ruled Florence. This is probably because the painting belonged to a member of the Medici family.
Botticelli did not call it 'Primavera'. The 16th-century writer Vasari described it as showing spring, and the name stuck.
