この作品のお話
Story岩山のほら穴の前で、茶色い服の修道士が両手を広げ、光を見上げています。動物や自然を愛したことで知られる、アッシジの聖フランチェスコです。描いたのはヴェネツィアの画家ジョヴァンニ・ベッリーニ。1475〜80年ごろの作品で、今はニューヨークのフリック・コレクションにあります。
In front of a cave in a rocky hill, a monk in a brown robe opens his arms and looks up at the light. He is Saint Francis of Assisi, famous for his love of animals and nature. The Venetian painter Giovanni Bellini made this picture around 1475–1480. It is now in the Frick Collection in New York.
フランチェスコは、からだにキリストと同じ傷をさずかったと伝えられる聖人です。けれど絵には天使も十字架も描かれていません。かわりに、左上から差しこむ明るい光が、神さまの存在を感じさせます。ベッリーニは油絵の具を使い、岩のひび、葉っぱ一枚一枚、遠くの城まで、細かく描きこみました。
Francis is said to have received wounds like those of Christ on his body. But there is no angel and no cross in this picture. Instead, a bright light shining from the upper left makes us feel that God is near. Bellini used oil paint to show every detail, from the cracks in the rocks to each leaf and the castle far away.
この絵は1525年、ヴェネツィアの貴族の家にあったことが記録に残っています。長い年月をへて、アメリカの実業家ヘンリー・クレイ・フリックが1915年に買い取りました。今ではフリック・コレクションの宝の一つで、ルネサンスの風景画の中でもとびきり美しい作品として知られています。
Records show that in 1525 the painting was in the house of a Venetian nobleman. Many years later, in 1915, the American businessman Henry Clay Frick bought it. Today it is one of the treasures of the Frick Collection, and it is known as one of the most beautiful landscape paintings of the Renaissance.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets右下、書見台の下を見てください。木のサンダルがぬいで置いてあります。聖書では、モーセが神の声を聞いたとき「くつをぬげ、ここは聖なる地だ」と言われます。フランチェスコもそれと同じだ、という読み方があります。
Look under the reading desk at the lower right. A pair of wooden sandals has been left there. In the Bible, Moses is told to take off his shoes because he stands on holy ground. Some people think Francis is doing the same thing here.
左下の岩には、小さな白い紙きれがはりつけてあるように描かれています。そこには「IOANNES BELLINVS」（ジョヴァンニ・ベッリーニ）の文字。本物の紙がはってあるように見せる、画家のちょっとしたいたずらです。
On a rock at the lower left, Bellini painted a tiny piece of white paper that seems to be stuck there. It says 'IOANNES BELLINVS', which is Giovanni Bellini in Latin. It is a little trick to make us think a real piece of paper is there.
左下の岩には、短い木のパイプがさしこまれています。わき水を受けるためのものです。これを、モーセが岩から水を出した聖書の物語に重ねる研究者もいます。小さな道具ひとつにも、意味がかくされているかもしれません。
At the lower left, a short wooden pipe sticks out of the rock to catch spring water. Some scholars link it to the Bible story in which Moses makes water come out of a rock. Even a small tool may have a hidden meaning.
傷をさずかる瞬間なのか、太陽を神にたたえる歌をうたっているところなのか、研究者の意見は分かれています。手には、うっすらと傷のようなあとが見えるという指摘もあります。答えが一つでないところも、この絵の魅力です。
Scholars do not agree on what moment this is. It may be the moment he receives his wounds, or he may be singing a song that praises God for the sun. Some say faint marks like wounds can be seen on his hands. Having more than one answer is part of its charm.
