Where is the angel? The picture makes you feel as if you are standing in the angel's place!
A woman in a blue veil stops reading, raises her face and looks slightly to one side. She is the Virgin Mary at the moment the angel Gabriel tells her that she will give birth to the Son of God. The painter was Antonello da Messina, from the island of Sicily in southern Italy. He made it around 1476, and it is now in a museum in Palermo, Sicily's capital.
Most paintings of the Annunciation show both Mary and the angel. But there is no angel in this one. Mary seems to look toward an angel outside the picture, while her outstretched hand reaches into our space. This can make viewers feel as if they are standing where the angel would be. Antonello was one of the first Italian painters to master oil painting, a method developed in northern Europe. You can see his skill in her smooth skin and the thin, light veil.
Antonello stayed in Venice in 1475–76, and his oil painting skills are thought to have influenced local painters such as Bellini. Today this small picture is one of the greatest treasures of Sicily. Its simple design and quiet face still move many people more than 500 years later.
This is Mary. She wears a blue veil. She is reading a book. Then she stops and raises her hand. There is no angel in the picture. Maybe you are the angel!
In the 16th century, the writer Giorgio Vasari said that Antonello learned the secrets of oil painting from Jan van Eyck in Flanders. But Van Eyck died in 1441, so the dates do not fit. Today, this story is thought to be untrue.
Mary's right hand is painted as if it is pushing forward toward us. This trick is called foreshortening, in which close objects are drawn shorter to show depth. The reading desk also sticks out toward us, so the wall between the picture and us seems to disappear.
Antonello painted another Virgin Annunciate, which is now in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, Germany. In that one, Mary looks down and crosses her hands on her chest. Comparing the two shows how bold the Palermo Mary is.
One page of the book on the desk is lifting up. Some people think it is the wind from the angel's arrival. With just one page, the painter may be showing an angel we cannot see.
