This is Mary. She wears a blue veil. She is reading a book. Then she stops and raises her hand. There is no angel in the picture. Maybe you are the angel!

A woman in a blue veil stops reading, raises her face and looks slightly to one side. She is the Virgin Mary at the moment the angel Gabriel tells her that she will give birth to the Son of God. The painter was Antonello da Messina, from the island of Sicily in southern Italy. He made it around 1476, and it is now in a museum in Palermo, Sicily's capital.

🦉 Fun Fact! In the 16th century, the writer Giorgio Vasari said that Antonello learned the secrets of oil painting from Jan van Eyck in Flanders. But Van Eyck died in 1441, so the dates do not fit. Today, this story is thought to be untrue.

ファン・エイクに弟子入りした？は作り話 16世紀の伝記作家ヴァザーリは、アントネッロがフランドルでヤン・ファン・エイクから油絵のひみつを学んだ、と書きました。けれどファン・エイクは1441年に亡くなっていて、年代が合いません。今ではこの話は作り話と考えられています。
