Antonello was born in Messina, on the island of Sicily, the son of a stonemason. He trained in Naples with the painter Colantonio, where he probably first saw oil paintings from northern Europe. He learned to build up oil paint in thin layers and painted portraits that look truly alive. From 1475 he stayed in Venice, and his work influenced local painters. He died in his hometown of Messina in 1479.
