The elected ruler of Venice — just look at his shining robe!
This is Leonardo Loredan, soon after he was elected Doge, the head of the Republic of Venice. He wears an unusual hat called a corno, a rich robe woven with silver and gold patterns, and big round buttons. He seems to smile gently, but there is something strict about him too. The great Venetian painter Giovanni Bellini painted it.
The Doge was the leader of Venice. He was elected by nobles and usually ruled for life. Bellini mastered oil painting, a method that came from northern Europe. He built up thin layers of paint to show the shine of the cloth and the lines on the skin. The figure sits above a ledge, like an ancient Roman portrait bust, which makes the Doge look dignified.
Loredan served as Doge for about 20 years, from 1501 to 1521, and led Venice through hard years of war with other European powers. Later, the portrait was bought by the English collector William Beckford. In 1844, the National Gallery in London bought it from him.
This old man is the Doge. He was the leader of Venice. He wears a strange hat and a shiny coat. His buttons are big and round. Look at the paper at the bottom. It has the painter's name on it!

そこには「IOANNES BELLINVS(ジョヴァンニ・ベッリーニ)」とラテン語で書かれています。
At the bottom, a small piece of paper seems to be stuck on the ledge. It says “IOANNES BELLINVS,” Giovanni Bellini's name in Latin. It is a little trick to make us think there is a real piece of paper there.
This portrait was once in the Grimani Palace in Venice, and it was acquired by the first Lord Cawdor, a British collector. In 1807, the English collector Beckford bought it for only 13 guineas. In 1844, he sold it to the National Gallery for 630 pounds.
In 1506, the German painter Dürer visited Venice. In a letter to a friend, he wrote that Bellini was very old but still the best painter of all. When he painted this portrait, Bellini was already nearly 70.
The Doge's unusual hat, the corno, is said to have come from the shape of a hood. Under it, he wears a small white linen cap, and you can see thin strings hanging near his ears. The hat was the sign of the Doge's rank.
