The Mona Lisa is a portrait that Leonardo da Vinci began around 1503. The model is thought to be Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Francesco del Giocondo, a merchant in Florence. 'Mona' means 'my lady'. She is also called La Gioconda, after her husband's name.
Leonardo did not give the painting to the Giocondo family, who may have ordered it. He kept it for many years and probably kept working on it late in his life. He used a technique called sfumato, softening the edges like smoke. Because of this, her smile seems to change each time you look. The mountains and rivers behind her are imaginary.
The painting was probably bought by King Francis I of France around 1518, and it became part of the French royal collection. Today it hangs behind bulletproof glass in the Louvre. The theft in 1911 made news around the world and made it even more famous. In 1962, it was valued at 100 million dollars for a trip to the US. This is a Guinness World Record for insurance value.

In August 1911, Vincenzo Peruggia, an Italian who had worked at the Louvre, hid the painting under his clothes and walked out. It was missing for over two years. The poet Apollinaire was arrested and Picasso was questioned. In 1913, Peruggia was caught trying to sell it in Florence.
In 2005, a note from 1503 was found in the margin of an old book at Heidelberg University Library. A man who knew Leonardo wrote that he was painting a portrait of Lisa del Giocondo. This strongly supports the idea that the model was Lisa.
After the French Revolution, the Mona Lisa went to the Louvre. But Napoleon liked it so much that he hung it in his bedroom at the Tuileries Palace for a while. Later it went back to the Louvre.
In 1919, the artist Marcel Duchamp drew a moustache and a beard on a cheap copy of the Mona Lisa. He called it L.H.O.O.Q. This joke on a masterpiece became a famous work of modern art.
