Michelangelo carved David from a single huge block of marble between the ages of 26 and 29. Including the base at his feet, carved from the same block, the statue is 517 centimeters tall. In the Bible, David is a young shepherd who defeats the giant Goliath with only a sling and a stone. The statue seems to show the tense moment just before the fight, as David stares at his enemy.
At that time, Florence was a small republic surrounded by powerful states. A boy who beats a giant was the perfect symbol for its people. David stands with his weight on one leg and the other leg relaxed, a pose learned from ancient Greek and Roman statues. His head and hands are a little large. This may be because the statue was first meant to be seen from far below.
In 1504, the statue was placed in front of the town hall, the Palazzo Vecchio, and it watched over the city for almost 370 years. This photo was taken in the 19th century by John Brampton Philpot, an English photographer who worked in Florence. It shows David when he still stood outdoors. In 1873, the statue was moved into the Accademia Gallery to protect it from the weather. The one in the square today is a copy.

This marble was cut from the quarry in the 1460s. First Agostino di Duccio, and later Antonio Rossellino, tried to carve it, but both stopped. People called the block “the Giant.” It lay unused for years until 1501, when it was finally given to the 26-year-old Michelangelo.
In January 1504, a committee met to decide where to put the almost-finished David. Its members included Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli and Perugino — names from any art textbook. In the end, they chose the entrance of the town hall.
In 1527, during a riot against the Medici family, a bench was thrown from a window of the town hall. It broke David's left arm into three pieces. Giorgio Vasari, then a boy and later a famous painter and writer, says he and a friend picked up the pieces and kept them safe. The arm was later put back together.
In 1991, a man in the Accademia Gallery took out a hidden hammer and hit David's left foot, breaking part of a toe. The pieces were collected and the toe was repaired. The attack showed the world how hard it is to protect a 500-year-old statue.
